Frequently asked questions

What data does SmileInspector hold?

Patient information, orthodontic treatment records, intraoral scans, STL files, CBCT and other imaging files, treatment plans, order files, production files, and your confidential business information. We call all of it case data.

Access to every system holding case data is restricted by role-based permissions and protected by multi-factor authentication. Amazon Web Services hosts the platform, and other service providers and SmileInspector team members based outside the United States are involved in delivering the service. Access to case data is role-based for all of them.

Encrypted in transit and at rest, in the United States by default, including backups. Other regions are available on request.

Yes. Deletion and access requests are handled under our privacy program, which covers retention, deletion and access for both patient and customer data.

None in the past three years.

SmileInspector is a cloud service. Patches and updates ship in our periodic releases as part of ongoing maintenance, and system activity is logged. Case data is backed up every day. SmileInspector runs on Amazon Web Services and relies on AWS services for infrastructure, business continuity and disaster recovery. The underlying AWS infrastructure carries Amazon's own Compute Service Level Agreement, which commits to 99.99% monthly uptime for compute deployed across multiple availability zones.

Yes. Artificial intelligence and machine learning are built into SmileInspector's planning tools. The software is intended for use by trained orthodontic professionals.

Yes. SmileInspector holds FDA 510(k) clearance K252507, determined substantially equivalent on January 7, 2026, as Class II orthodontic software under 21 CFR 872.5470. The clearance covers tools for management of orthodontic models, systematic inspection, detailed analysis, treatment simulation and virtual design of dental casts that may be used for sequential aligner trays or retainers. Use requires training and domain knowledge in orthodontics, and dedicated training in the software. A quality management system is being implemented. Search K252507 in the FDA 510(k) Premarket Notification Database to verify the record.
